Supper Report - 01/11/02

26 members and their wives and other halves assembled at the Eight Bells for an end-of-season supper.

An excellent chicken curry with accoutrements followed by cheeses was served and a fine Taylor's LBV port generously donated by our President Hugh Thornton, was much enjoyed. The first food was thrown at 21.05hrs; a skilfully flighted delivery from left to right caught the reclining Mr. Slow in his chair. A plain nan/popadum riposte from MS found its target on the forehead of aspirant webmeister Waterballoon, laying low his claims to title of a cup.

Finally, Potty arose. Without office but without doubt our most senior and respected member he allowed the intrusion of Mr. Slow to present the cups.

Firstly, the fielding cup was awarded to James Lee for his outstanding contributions in the field. Sadly, he was in New York for the presentation and will have to wait to receive his trophy.

Secondly, for the most improved and promising young player, Joe Dutton was the recipient. Most deservedly so and a cheerful round of applause for Joe as he supped his breezer apologetically.

Thirdly, the cup for the performance of the season was awarded to Will Amos for his fantastic contributions to league side batting totals. If only he could bowl.................

Fourthly, Mr Slow hobbled to the rostrum to present himself with the Harry Morton trophy for contributions for the club. It appears that not every body finds his web site boring!

Finally and perhaps most importantly, the Ian Fisher memorial trophy was presented to Chris Ayers the captain of the Suffolk side which won the annual Essex Vs Suffolk challenge in June. Avid readers of this web site will have learned that all members were devastated at the premature death of Fish earlier in the year. His memory will live on though, in the trophy which will be contested every year. The presentation was made by Tina, who had joined us for the occasion.

And so matters progressed. Some members departed early, citing family commitments. The Sudbury challenge faded, with the departure of Waterdenture, full of dark shaving foam - the peril of fizzy beer! Others stayed to drink, with a familiar trio of Roper, Bocking and Ayers C. putting the world to rights over beer. Welcome additions of McKenna, Thornton S. (remember him?), Mitchell and Haines were made. The long-suffering Mrs. Haines, once again pregnant, was as cheerful as ever. Well, as cheerful as one could ever be having had to suffer the indignity of physical contact with her husband on a regular and ongoing basis for the last ten years, or even longer. She really is a star!

And so the season closed. A fine supper to end a fine season and next year to look forward to.

Just can't wait!
