Match Report - Bures vs. Marconi Club 30/04/05
Marconi 120 (30 overs) Bures 110 for 9 (30 overs) Marconi won by 10 runs An early-season social encounter played in the Spring sunshine on a slow, low and green pitch at Bures. Bar Steward-cum-captain-cum- batsman Billy Wignall dominated the innings with a fine 50 as Bures bowlers struggled with the conditions. The Marconi total was not a huge one, but probably more challenging than it looked. The Bures reply was steady rather than spectacular, with Steve Thornton making a welcome return to the crease as an opening bat and Damien Elliott making a jaunty start at the other end. Behind the rate, Si Ayers strode to the crease and smote two mighty sixes, looking as if he would finish the game in about 3 overs. Sadly, Si perished leaving Junior Slow to waft at a pea-roller and begin the long walk back. Disappointing dismissals for Captain McKenna and CJC and the demise of Thorny left Mitch at the crease with Roger Chunnoo, with 15 runs required for victory off the final over, a task which was sadly beyond them. Victory for an aimable Marconi side! The two sides repaired to the 'Shoes for refreshment but were frustrated by an inability to get served. Captain McKenna and Roger showed admirable leadership qualities in opening the first self-service bar in Bures, the concept of which was much appreciated by all present. As Marconi moved off to their Chelmsford base, talk in the pub was of next week's tour to Norfolk ....... Contact us - here |
