Match Report - Earls Colne & Bures vs. Kirby 28/08/05

PDQ North Essex Cricket League - Division 2

Kirby  259 for 3 (45 overs)

E C & Bures 131 all out (31 overs)

(Martin Stonley 47)

Kirby won by 128 runs

This clash of the bottom of the table clubs should have been an epic but blistering batting on the part of Kirby and a poor response by E C & Bures condemns the home side to third division cricket next year.

Opting to bat on a true but slow Bures surface, Kirby were quickly in the runs forcing Mr. Slow to rotate his bowlers in a vain attempt to restore order, but sadly with only Peter Shury emerging with any credit (10-3-31-0). There followed a brief respite from the onslaught but the Kirby batters prevailed with Messrs. Wilson and Wells closing with 113 and 78 respectively and the score on 259 for 3, a formidable target.

A Ros Brogan tea put E C & Bures in good heart but the dream was shattered as Lewis Chambers returned to the pavilion without troubling the scorer. CP briefly threatened but fell cheaply, leaving the robust figure of Stonners to fly the flag for the home side. Ably assisted by a less brutal but more cultured Wiggy, Mister Stonley smote the ball many a mile prompting a number of interruptions for retrieval of the ball from the garden of the old vicarage, and beyond. This brief hope was quickly extinguished with the dismissal of both batters and the E C & B tail fell away quickly as the sun started to set.

Another defeat. But optimism and good spirit aplenty on the part of Earls Colne and Bures. We may be down, but never out!
