Match Report Tollesbury Vs Bures 28/07/02
Fantastic Bures flay Tollesbury!
Bures' league side (a collection of old farts and under 18s actually), comprehensively beat Tollesbury in an oven masquerading as a cricket pitch over at Tollesbury-next-the-Sea.
Having won the toss and electing to bat (thus committing the Bures boys to a 3 hour stint in the sun at 28C), lowly Tollesbury got off to a good start on a hard but bumpy wicket with outfield to match. Alan Watersmeet was quickly into his stride however, bowling an excellent line, using his height well and getting the Tollesbury skipper caught behind cheaply. A little sadly, he was the only person in the east of England who did not hear the nick of bat on ball, but the umpire in the very senior and experienced form of a certain Mr. Prestney of Earls Colne, raised the finger. Meanwhile, the middle order began to enjoy themselves against the youthful Bures change bowlers but extraordinarily, the introduction of Mr Slow brought two wickets clean bowled, probably the only two which were straight and which pitched in the right half of the wicket. Deprived of their middle order, the whackers arrived and tea was taken with Tollesbury at 207 for 7, probably about 50 runs short. Waterfeature 1 for 27, Chambers 2 for 39, Mr. Slow 2 for 39.
Following rehydration, a rejigged batting order saw Potty opening with Wamos and David Warden (nursing a bruised hand, just for a change) relegated to four. Potty must be the most travelled "batsman" in the club, having occupied every position in the order this year. He applied himself diligently to his task, trying very hard to curb his natural instinct to play across the line. Sadly, his Herculean effort ended in the fourth over, with an attempted extra-cover drive ending with the face of the bat pointing to fine leg to the painful and inevitable accompaniment of the clatter of woodwork. Enter Wiggy at three. Quickly into his stride, Wiggy announced his intentions with a lovely straight six off the Tollesbury opening bowler and followed with some super off side play off both front and back foot. And that, as they say was that. Wiggy 74 not out made it look easy. Well done Wiggy but also the youngsters, who stuck to their fielding very well in difficult conditions.
Oh, I almost forgot. Wamos got 107 not out.....................
Tollesbury 207 for 7 (45 overs). Bures 208 for 1 (36 overs).
Victory for Bures by 9 wickets.
