Match Report - Bures vs. Leavenheath 23/08/03

Bures 206 for 6 dec.

Leavenheath 128 all out

Bures won by 78 runs

Bures comfortably won this encounter with Leavenheath, on a hard, flat and thoroughly excellent batting surface at Bures.

The Leavenheath skip., having won the toss, was sufficiently encouraged by more than a tinge of green in the playing surface to ask Bures to bat. But a strong performance from the Bures batters sentenced Leavenheath to a long and hot afternoon fielding in the sun. The Bures innings featured a quite extraordinary innings from Lewis Chambers who seemed able to hit virtually every delivery for four, before giving his wicket away for a magnificent 73. Si & Chris Ayers provided determined support with 32 and 55 respectively before Mr. Slow declared five minutes before tea at 206 for 6, a good but not out-of-reach total on an excellent batting wicket and with a lightening fast outfield.

A customarily good Bures tea By Carol Law was much enjoyed with nothing but a crumb or two left on either table before Bures took to the field to defend their total. The tea break provided a welcome sideshow, with a display of Kwik cricket from Bures seven year olds Jack Crace and Ollie Bocking. Their match involved some quite excellent batting and bowling but also a quite detailed discussion about the precise nature of the LBW law some details of which might have been beyond some of the senior players!

A combined Crace and McKenna opening attack made run gathering difficult after the resumption and after 10 overs it was clear that Leavenheath were not going to approach the Bures total. It remained to be seen whether they would last out the final 20 overs for a draw. In fact, it proved beyond them despite spirited resistance for the seventh and eight wickets. Crucially, several good catches were held (McKenna, Mr. & Junior Slow) to swing the balance with Leavenheath all out in the penultimate over. Sadly, the Bures victory march was marred by an injury to Darren Bugbee who fell awkwardly when fielding at extra cover and suffered a broken ankle. Thankfully, first aid in the very senior and professional shape of recently retired Consultant John Symons was available and poor Darren was whisked off to A & E with only a leg in plaster and six weeks on crutches to look forward to. The things that people will do to avoid buying a round!

Bures bowling figures......

Rehydration was sought in The Bells with copious glasses of all sorts of stuff enjoyed. A welcome bonus was the unexpected arrival of buckshee roast tatties and sausage pie, á la Mme. Norton. Discussions continued into the night about the game and its implications for world peace. Leavenheath are an amiable bunch and we will look forward to next year's games.
