Match Report - Bures Vs Tollesbury 22/09/02
A sad day for Tollesbury in our last home game before the excavation of the allotment this coming Tuesday. Ironically, the square looked in fine fettle having had an unusually close cut for the occasion!
Tollesbury arrived with only 6 players with Crace and Mr. Slow taking the required 5 wickets for only 25 runs. Indeed, they may never have crept over 20, had Ropes not spilled a hat-trick chance off Cracey!
Faced with a daunting target, Captain Amos opted for youth rather than experience in the shape of Messrs. Sills and Lee. But the departure of the openers, to a surprisingly useful Tollesbury attack, focussed the Bures mind a little. The departure of Tozer, Ayres S. and Dutton raised the stakes but Bures were seen safely home in their quest for the mamouth target by Crace and Slow, with Amos, Warden, Whitthread and Roper still in the pavilion.
So victory for Bures by 5 wickets (and perhaps more importantly, 20 league points), but a disappointing end to our home game season on a glorious September afternoon. Unusually, tea was taken AFTER the game and jolly good it was too. Mrs. Ayers laid on a customarily good spread which was devoured in next to no time as was of course her bottle of rosé which she resolutely refused to share (and who can blame her?). All over and done with before 4 o'clock. And so Bures repaired not to the pub but to the back garden where lawns were treated to an unexpected cut and thoughts turned to the final match next week at Star Stile against Halstead.
