Match Report - Earls Colne & Bures vs. Cavaliers 18/06/06
Cavaliers 155 all out (40 overs) (Chris Chambers 10-2-21-5) Earls Colne & Bures 156 for 5 (39 overs) (Colin Bocking 44 not out) Earls Colne & Bures won by 5 wickets Another win, this time at the Colchester Rugby Club, but as the Cavaliers openers laid into the E C & B opening bowlers, it could have been so different! From a privileged position of 73 for 0, Cavaliers collapsed to 155 all out in the face of an accurate and excellent 5 wicket haul from Chris Chambers and with two apiece for Mr. Slow and new recruit James Durkin, tea was served! A second alfresco tea in two weeks was much enjoyed in the Colchester sunshine and once again the E C & B openers made a good start in the reply with Himesh Patel particularly fluent, but again both fell prematurely, as did Wiggy (subdued, and batting in stodge mode), Phil Frances and Chris Chambers. The arrival of Mr. Slow at the crease livened things up a bit and as last week at Kirby, in partnership with a very sensible Joe Smith, (ask his mum, is that the first time that the words "sensible" and "Joe Smith" have been used in the same sentence together?) the score approached and eventually exceeded the target without further loss. Brilliant! A comfortable victory over an affable opponent. Sadly, things were to take a turn for the worse. Anxious for refreshment, a number of E C & B worthies decided to try the local "pub", the Dog & Pheasant. Fighting through the Hungry Horse diners who were clogging the way to the bar with their oversize trough-type dinner plates, a sad site greeted the thirsty. A full display of fluorescent national brands and not a drop of decent beer in sight. Hasty rearrangements were made (sadly excluding poor Cliffy, Jane and Joe) who were suffering silently and dutifully in the corner. The Anchor at Nayland provided respite and sent us home happy. This win takes us up to 4th place in the division. Next week, table-topping Lexden!
