Match Report - Earls Colne & Bures vs. West Mersea 14/05/06 West Mersea 290 for 8 (45 overs) High Easter 242 for 8 (45 overs) (Phil Frances 103 not out, Himesh Patel 70) West Mersea won by 48 runs Exciting, high-scoring game culminating in a reasonably comfortable victory for Mersea but only after a scare or two! Mersea began steadily but proceedings were wholeheartedly invigorated by the arrival of Mersea skipper Luke Conway to the crease, striking a cool 120 from just 56 balls! His departure left the innings becalmed, but the Mersea tail wagged to the disappointment of the flagging E C & B bowlers, with Mersea closing on an impressive 290 for 8. The E C & B reply began steadily with fellow 16-year-olds Himesh Patel and James Bocking at the crease, but the boys started to have fun at the expense of the Mersea change bowlers and with the arrival of Phil Frances at the crease, the innings began to motor! There was hope that the mighty Mersea total might be overhauled but Himesh perished for a fluent 70, bringing a rather hung-over Wiggy to the crease. Boundaries continued to flow, but poor Wiggy, on the charge, was stumped. Hopes then rested with Phil (who remained prolific) and Stonners the Great, who was having some difficulty in getting bat to meet ball! Sadly, the great man was castled, effectively bringing the run-chase to a close. Phil Frances continued onwards for an excellent maiden 100; he would have bought a jug of beer if he had been old enough! An entertaining game in which we were beaten by an extraordinary innings by the Mersea skipper. We live on . . . .
