Comprehensive victory for E C
& B at Earls Colne, which virtually guarantees promotion for
the home side to the 2nd division of the PDQ League next year.
Having won the toss, High
Easter struggled to make runs on a wicket offering some help to
the Oakley/Lesiak attack, but progress was steady with the
visitors reasonably placed at 77 for 2 off 21 overs. Chester
treated the introduction of the change bowlers with some
contempt, smiting Chambers C. for a flurry of boundaries before
the bowler had his revenge as a faint touch of ball on glove
went to hand and the batter very sportingly walked. From here,
the High Easter innings collapsed and with David Coyle bowling
to a field of close catchers, wickets began to tumble. High
Easter were all out for 120 off 37 overs.
In reply, E C & B suffered
an early loss as Chambers C. was bowled, but David Coyle and
Craig Lesiak restored some order. Until, that is, Lesiak was
comically run out and then sent back following a ludicrous call
from his partner. However, Lazy's baby sister Glenda entered the
fray and made it look quite easy with the target being reached
in just 18 overs, Glenda herself at 59 not out and Coyley 30 not
out.
But the real match was yet to
come. The High Easter players were looking comfortable in the
bar and had made unreasonable inroads into the Otter Bitter.
Various E C & B worthies lined up at the bar with squinted
eyes, sensing a confrontation. The atmosphere could have been
cut with a knife as the two teams surveyed each other
suspiciously, each waiting for the first move from the other.
And then the race was on, with Messrs. Chester and Chinnery
leading from the front for High Easter and Messrs. Oakley and
Slow giving chase for E C & B. With rounds of drinks being
bought at a frenetic pace, Mr. Webb the bartender was drawn into
the conflict. Early signs of weakness on the E C & B front
were detected as various players drifted off, prompting High
Easter to pile on the pressure with yet another round of Otter
Bitters. Sensing an ignominious defeat for the home side, Mr.
Webb unsportingly proffered pints of GK IPA to the visitors who
not unsurprisingly gave it short shrift. As the sun set, it
became apparent that E C & B had been outgunned. To the
jeers and cheers of the High Easter players, Oakley departed on
all fours, citing marital commitments, leaving Mr. Slow
dangerously exposed. Fatally weakened by a week at the Chappel
Beer festival, the old stager was unable to respond and sensing
defeat, Mr. Webb announced that the Otter Bitter cask was empty,
bringing an end to the contest but with only one clear winner.
High Easter might have lost the cricket, but they thrashed us in
the bar ..........!
