Match Report - Earls Colne & Bures vs. Great Totham 18/06/05
Totham 320 for 6 (45 overs) Earls Colne & Bures 263 for 9 (45 overs) (Chris Chambers 87 not out) Great Totham won by 57 runs A glut of runs at Great Totham's tiny ground! Mr. Slow was pained to learn that he had called incorrectly and was to be sentenced to some 3 hours fielding in a cauldron, with temperatures reaching 30ºC. The E C & B bowlers were quickly put to the sword despite an early wicket courtesy of a stunning catch from Henry Pilgrim in the covers. The final ten overs proved especially painful as the Totham tail enjoyed itself on the hard and flat wicket, taking full advantage of the short boundaries. Totham closed at 320 for 6 with only Peter Shury of the E C & B bowlers emerging with any credit in a tidy spell, 10 overs for 40 runs. The huge total was always going to be beyond the E C & B batters, and wickets fell at regular intervals before useful contributions from Phil Frances and Jeff Lynn gave heart. Enter Chris Chambers, batting at 9, who began to smite the ball in all directions, and quite often out of the ground! The wagging tail frustrated the Totham bowlers who were unable to break the last wicket partnership of Chambers and Joe Smith. La pièce de resistance was a colossal six from Chambers, out of the ground, over the road into the car park of the Bull, onto the roof of the Landlord's car on the full and then sideways through one of the windows of the pub! Great stuff, but sadly another surcharge on Totham's insurance premium! E C & B closed at 263 for 9, still well short of the Totham total but with honour preserved. The mainly young E C & B side (six players aged 20 or under today) is struggling at this level but the boys are learning fast and are playing with admirable spirit. Despite the defeat, the mood in the Bull afterwards was buoyant with talk of seeing out the season and looking to the next. On to next week ...... Contact us - here |
