Bures just fail in run chase. Gestingthorpe 155 for 9. Bures 146 all out. |

An excellent afternoon's cricket between these village rivals ended in a narrow victory for the visitors. Electing to field first, Chris Crace and Chris Chambers were quickly among the wickets with some admirably tight bowling. With 3 wickets down and precious few runs in the book, Bures scented a rout but it was not to be. Batting at no. 5 for Gestingthorpe, Gardener made 89 not out in a very sensible and well-judged innings. The Bures bowlers toiled in the afternoon sun but made little impact. Mr. Slow took regular wickets but sadly leaked a few too many runs. A first for the club was Gestingthorpe batsman Wright, caught Bocking J. bowled Bocking C., a son and father combination. A
proper Bures tea á la Carol was hoovered with customary Bures
efficiency, ready for the reply. Master batsman Warden, in his customary
opening role, disappointed in a most disappointing fashion as only
disappointments can be, spooning the gentlest of catches to square leg.
Alan Cropper, back from permanent injury, fell in his quest for quick
runs. Chris Ayers, back from less-than-permanent injury, lobbed up an
easy catch off a full-toss and departed disgruntled. Meanwhile, James
Lee accumulated steadily at the other end and showed the benefits of the
hard work which he is putting in as far as improving his batting is
concerned. Sadly, on the brink of an excellent innings, he was run out
for 32 cantering a single. Yet another lesson learned, but we all know
that his time will come for he is an excellent prospect. Enter bowling
gurus Crace and Chambers C. who proceeded to tonk the Gestingthorpe
attack to all parts. Suddenly, an improbable Bures victory seemed
possible and the arrival of Patrick McKenna in the spectators gallery
added moral support. But Big Pat was not his usual self. He had been off
on a boat earning his Scouts' fishing badge and his close contact with
11 little darlings had had a profound effect on him.
However, having a gibbering wreck on the boundary did not cause undue concern on the pitch. Messrs. Crace and Chambers continued their onward march until the latter was disappointingly caught for an excellent 52. Two Bockings and a Bugbee departed rapidly before sterner resistance from Lee Norton, who capitulated in the penultimate over. Rickado Chunnoo strode to the crease to play for a draw but Cracey babe had other ideas. Poor Rickado, (running like a poof, as McKenna put it and let's face it, he would know!) was run out attempting a Crace-inspired second run and that, as they say, was that. Cracey left high and dry on 50, not out. Polly Chambers crumbled a rusk in commiseration and we all buggered off to the pub. |

Man of the Match - Chris Chambers. Often overlooked. We all just expect him to bowl and bat well and provide a level head in our many crises. 1 for 18 off 9 overs. 52 runs. An excellent match for Potty! p.s. Wife still required (must like dogs), to share his palatial abode!

James Lee contemplates his dismissal and performs an un-natural manoeuvre with his left arm; various oiks salivate over Big Pat's day release from the asylum; Bill "Darren Bugbee" Frindell scores with commendable application; James Bocking in mountaineering training just to keep the scoreboard up-to-date. |
