Match Report - Earls Colne & Bures vs. Abberton 06/06/04 PDQ Cars League Match - Division 3 Earls Colne & Bures 227 for 5 (45 overs) (Matt Whitthread 90, David Coyle 66, James Lee 34 not out) Abberton 70 All Out (46.4 overs) Earls Colne & Bures won by 157 runs.
The Earls Colne & Bures bandwagon rolls on with this comprehensive thrashing of Abberton. Batting first on a green wicket, E C & B openers Whitthread and Amos were quickly in to their stride before the latter uncharacteristically perished off a rare defensive shot. Undeterred, Whitters progressed smoothly not afraid to use the aerial route as befits the Bures tradition but interspersed with trademark square cuts and ably partnered by David Coyle. At 157 for 1 off 35 overs, the stage was set for a 10 over flourish and with Whitters departing for an entertaining 90 and Coyley for 66, enter youngsters Joe Dutton and James Lee both of whom smacked the ball with a vengeance. The final over yielded 21, including three sixes, one onto the roof of the pavilion, one over mid-wicket and the final ball dumped appropriately enough into the river! Bures closed at 227 for 5, a formidable target for the opposition. Tea was taken courtesy of Carol Law who upheld the tradition of Bures teas with a fine spread. The Abberton reply started shakily, with a wicket in the first over for "Wolfie" Gibson. None of the Abberton top order really got in and the tail was quickly exposed and disposed of by Craig Lesiak and David Coyle, the latter finishing with most impressive figures of 5.4-0-8-5 despite a pair of full tosses both of which bizarrely yielded wickets! Abberton capitulated to 70 all out ensuring an early exit to The Eight Bells. Another game and another scalp for the combined league team........
