Match Report - Bures Vs. Chappel 03/06/03
Chappel brushed aside by rampant Bures in 20-over thrash.
Match Result - Bures 164 for 5. Chappel 136 for 7. Win for Bures.
Bures shrugged off recent disappointment and the trauma of league withdrawal with an emphatic victory over local rivals Chappel & Wakes Colne in this first round Halstead KO match.
It could have been so different. Bures were invited to bat on a soft green wicket, next the water tower. Opening Chappel bowler Patmore quickly dismissed Bures openers Will Amos and James Lee and with Chris Ayers back in the pavilion at 12 for 3, it looked bleak. But Lewis Chambers started to find the middle of a succession of bats and with support from Chris Crace, the total mounted. There followed a blistering assault on the change bowlers by both batsmen with particular advantage being taken of a short leg-side boundary. Chambers was run out in the 17th over and Marc Norton joined Crace at the crease and further damage was inflicted and several balls lost. Of particular note was a Crace straight six which soared over long-off and landed in the garden of the house opposite. Another lost ball! Joe Dutton completed an extraordinary sequence of innings by hooking his first and only delivery for 6. Thus his last three innings for Bures have been golden duck, golden duck, 6! It's a fine line between success and failure, you know! Innings closed on 164 for 5, Lewis Chambers 56, Chris Crace 62.
In reply, Chappel started tentatively in their quest for a daunting total. Mr. Slow set a deep field and invited the slog with a number of teasing deliveries and Steady McKenna gave little away at the other end. MS was rewarded with 3 scalps in his 5 overs and although the change bowlers took some stick as the Chappel tail wagged, the total was never threatened with The Skipper weighing in with a handy 4 for.
