Match Report Bures Vs Abberton 14/07/02
With many regular players unavailable for this Division One league fixture, it was a victory in itself to be able to take eleven players down to Abberton! With Crace unavailable, Skinner on the juice, Haines on the water, Burle injured, Wiggy injured (but playing under duress) and Ayresy working at the Jazz, the team looked under-strength. However batting first , Amos embarked on his now familiarly manic start hitting the ball to all parts before falling cheaply (and a little predictably) for 35. Sadly, none of the other batsmen really got going and it was quickly the turn of the lower order to restore a semblance of respectability with a couple of lusty blows from Waterweasel, a most entertaining innings from Wiggy who batted left-handed (I kid you not) and a most encouraging couple of blows from James Bocking aged 12, who if he does not have a bright future in the game deserves to be shot along with his ailing father. Innings closed at 97 all out.
After tea, Abberton did not quite have it all their own way with two early wickets for Marc Norton and a juicy LBW for Mr. Slow which attracted the customary ridicule from his team mates. But 97 was about 120 runs short of a defendable total and under the incessant audio accompaniment of a domestic burglar alarm at an adjacent property, the target was reached for 4 wickets.
So not quite ignominious defeat, but close. And next week it will be different, of course!
