Match Report - Bures Vs Gestingthorpe 06/07/02

Six from Bures and five from Twinstead did battle at Gestingthorpe, effectively creating a "Burestead" eleven.

We lost. By 10 wickets. Not so much a defeat as a thrashing. It was one of those days when everything went wrong. Bures 118 all out. Gestingthorpe 119 for 0.

Things actually started well! Having elected to bat on a green and soft wicket which would obviously favour the bowlers, the Burestead skipper (idiot!) watched Duncalfe and Wigan rattle along at over five an over and even after the departure of the former, Wiggy continued in great style. Unfortunately, he got no meaningful help from any other batsman and was out for an impressive 60. Resuming after tea, disaster struck (well no, it was the ball actually..) with stand-in wicketkeeper Duncalfe retiring hurt. But worry not, the ever-flexible Wiggy strapped on the pads and also provided a substitute fielder in the form of Paul from New Zealand. It would be ingenerous of me to comment adversely about Wiggy's abilities behind the stumps but suffice to say that with the taking of the gloves he evolved into one of the most persistent appealers ever to wear the Bures colours. Down the leg side? Too high? Too far forward? Don't let that put you off Wiggy, you have a good old shout my son. Gestingthorpe accumulated runs steadily and despite the efforts of 6 Burestead bowlers, lost no wickets. It was just one of those days when everything that was hit in the air fell into free space.

Needless to say, the mood was sombre in the Pheasant afterwards. "Who won?" asked the Landlord cheerfully. "Gestingthorpe" we mumbled. "Christ!" he replied. "You guys MUST be bad..........."

Further ignominy for the skipper in the pub when, having comprehensively thrashed Wiggy at bar billiards, he knocked the black mushroom down. Like I said, just not our day.
