To cut a fairly long story short, we scored 252 for 6 in 45 overs, with Amos scoring an outstanding 99. It was a slightly ill-tempered affair, with constant sledging from the HP fielders. You will understand gentlemen that the majority of our runs came from mishits, including presumably the one which went over the pavilion, the two that went into the river and several which had to be retrieved from the vicarage. The boys from the by-pass were not 'appy. An appropriate response from the Spillers was expected after tea. And so it proved. Representing the town which redefined the standard in trunk-road congestion, HP progressed smoothly to a threatening 37 for 8 and we knew we were in trouble. It was a great surprise when they succumbed to 82 all out, a tight finish by a margin of only 170 runs which had the gallery on the edge of its seat. Outstanding bowling from Burle (5 for 24), Chambers C. (2 for 23), Waterchute (1 for 15) and even dear old Mr. Slow much enjoying his return to league cricket with a pie-rich 2 for 15.
